Family Migration
The New Zealand Government sets the number of places available under the Family Quota Category each year.
The Family Quota category is run by ballot and aims to reunify families by granting residence to a quota of family members of New Zealand citizens and residents who are not eligible for residence under any other visa category.
You may only apply for a visa under this category if your New Zealand sponsor’s registration was drawn from the ballot.
Some of the Family Migration Programs are:-
- New Zealand Partner Migration.
- New Zealand Dependent child migration
- Student partner work visa
- Parent Retirement category
Family Migration basic criteria
You (and your partner and children) are eligible for the Family Quota category if:
- You are sponsored by your adult child, adult grandchild, adult sibling or parent;
- You are not eligible for residence in New Zealand under any other residence category except the Refugee Family Quota category;
- Your New Zealand sponsor’s registration was selected from the ballot;
- You apply within 6 months of us writing to your sponsor advising their registration has been drawn from the ballot; AND
- You are healthy and of good character.
Your sponsor must:
- Be 17 years of age or over;
- Be in New Zealand;
- Be a New Zealand citizen or the holder of a current Residence Permit that is not subject to requirements under section 18A of the Immigration Act 1987;
- Have been a New Zealand citizen and/or the holder of a Residence Permit or a Returning Resident’s Visa for at least 3 years immediately before the date they lodge their registration under the Family Quota category; AND
- Have spent a total of 184 days or more in New Zealand in each of those 3 years.
The requirements for this visa also states your family sponsor must make a legal declaration they will provide you with financial support and accommodation (if necessary) for at least the first 2 years of your residence in New Zealand.
New Zealand Partner Migration
Partner of a Worker Work Visa
This visa is for you if you want to come to New Zealand to work while your partner is here on a work visa. Your partner’s work visa must be for more than 6 months for you to be eligible.
Criteria you must meet
- Your partner must have a work visa that’s for more than 6 months.
- You must be living in a genuine and stable relationship with your partner.
- Your partner must support your application.
- You must have enough money to live on while you’re in New Zealand or a sponsor.
Rights of Partner of a Worker Work Visa
- You can work in any employment you like, as long as:
- You are legally authorize to work anywhere
- You are allow to invest / open SME
- You are also allow to work under regulatory occupation if have any occupational registration that’s needed to do that work in New Zealand.
- After you arrive, you can travel in and out of New Zealand as many times as you like before your visa expires.
How long can I stay on this visa : For the same time allowed by your partner’s work visa. After this visa you can apply for a visitor, student, or resident visa.
New Zealand Dependent Child Migration
This visa is for you if you’re a New Zealand citizen or resident living in New Zealand and you want to bring your dependent children (Up to 24 years) to New Zealand to live with you. If your children are granted residence, they can live, study and work in New Zealand indefinitely.
Criteria you must meet :
- You must be a New Zealand citizen or resident and live in New Zealand.
- You must be the parent or legal guardian of the children you want to bring to New Zealand.
- Your children must be single, 24 or under, and rely on an adult for financial support.
- If your resident visa is subject to section 49 conditions, your child’s visa will be subject to those same conditions.
How long can I stay on this visa: Indefinitely, Your children can travel in and out of New Zealand until their travel conditions expire.
With this visa you can:
Bring your dependent children to New Zealand to live with you. If they’re old enough they can study or work here too. After this visa you may wish to apply for a permanent resident visa for your children.
Sometimes visas are subject to extra conditions under section 49(1) of the Immigration Act 2009. We call these section 49 conditions. For example, if you’re granted residence under the Skilled Migrant Category a section 49 condition could be that you take up an offer of skilled employment within 3 months of arriving in New Zealand.
Partner of a Student Work Visa

This visa is for you your partner is a New Zealand citizen or resident and you want to live with them in New Zealand. If you’re granted New Zealand residence, you can live, work and study here indefinitely.
Criteria you must meet :
- You must have been living together in a genuine and stable relationship with your partner for 12 months or more.
- Your partner must support your application.
- If your partner’s New Zealand residence status is based on their Australian residence status, your partner must live in New Zealand.
How long can I stay on this Visa : Indefinitely
With this visa you can :
- Live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely.
- Bring dependent children with you.
- Be granted a permanent resident visa straightaway – to be eligible your partner will need to be a New Zealand citizen and you’ll need to have been living together outside of New Zealand for 5 years or more.
After this visa : If you were granted a resident visa, you can apply for a permanent resident visa. If you were granted a permanent resident visa, you may wish to apply for New Zealand citizenship. Contact the Department of Internal Affairs for details.
Parent Retirement Category
This visa is for you if you have an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident, and you want to live in New Zealand permanently. You’ll need an annual income of NZ $60,000 plus $1 million to invest for 4 years, and another NZ $500,000 to live on.
Once you’ve completed the 4 year investment period, you’ll be eligible for permanent residence.
Criteria you must meet
- You must have an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident, and no dependent children.
- You must have NZ $1 million or more to invest in New Zealand for 4 years, and another NZ $500,000 or more on top of your investment funds.
- You must have an annual income of NZ $60,000 or more.
How long can I stay on this visa: Indefinitely (if you meet the conditions of your visa).
With this visa you can:
- Live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely.
- Bring your partner with you if you include them in your residence application.
- Be eligible for residence after 2 years of keeping your funds invested in New Zealand, and permanent residence after 4 years.
